Ona for Open Source

Open source has always been part of our story.

Gitpod itself began as an open-source project, and many of the ideas that shaped it came from working closely with maintainers and contributors across the ecosystem. When Gitpod evolved into Ona, we brought that same commitment forward - combining cloud development environments with AI agents that can work autonomously on your codebase.

Today, we're re-launching our Open Source intiative and introduce Ona for Open Source: a program that gives open-source maintainers and contributors up to $200/month in free AI credits.

What we learned from OSS maintainers

Over the years, working closely with open-source maintainers using Gitpod's Open Source plan, the same challenges kept coming up:

• PR backlogs grow faster than they can be reviewed
• Maintainers spend large amounts of time onboarding contributors and answering setup questions
• Reviewing changes often means reconstructing context instead of focusing on intent and correctness
• And now, with AI tools everywhere, maintainers also have to sift through a growing volume of low-signal or poorly contextualized PRs

These problems haven't gone away. If anything, they've intensified.
